I learnt that the hard way.

Years ago, I was just a guy with a deep love for plants and a habit of getting soil under my nails every weekend. I wasn’t a “brand” or a “supplier”, I was simply obsessed with figuring out why some plants thrived while others struggled, even when they had the same water, sunlight, and care.

That curiosity, or maybe my stubbornness, eventually became Umya Nutrients.

The Spark That Started It All

The name Umya comes from Xhosa, meaning “native hemp plant.” But the story isn’t about one plant, it’s about what that plant taught me about plant biology enhancement.

It showed me that small differences in nutrition, soil biology, and timing could mean the difference between a plant that barely survives and one that flourishes.

I started experimenting with plant nutrition solutions in my backyard when I did a school project at the age of 15. And no, there were no “hemp” plants in my parents’ backyard then, just vegetables and ornamentals.

I began with generic fertilisers and traditional NPK mixes. Through my school project I was introduced to humic and fulvic acids, and that’s when the real testing began — with organic plant supplements, water-soluble and liquid fertilisers, soil conditioners, and naturally occurring bio-stimulants.

The results? Incredible.
The process? Therapeutic.

I remember thinking: I’ve got to find a way of sharing this experience with other plant enthusiasts.
